Every life is both ordinary and extraordinary, and Logan Mountstuart's - stretching across the twentieth century - is a rich tapestry of both. As a writer who finds inspiration with Hemingway in Paris and Virginia Woolf in London, as a spy recruited by Ian Fleming and betrayed in the war, and as an art-dealer in '60s New York, Logan mixes with the men and women who shape his times. But as a son, friend, lover and husband, he makes the same mistakes we all do in our search for happiness. Here, then, is the story of a life lived to the full - and a journey deep into a very human heart.

There were times when I got irritated with this story. Is it feasible for one person to be involved in the Spanish civil war, world war 2, Biafra and the Bader Meinhof group. And at the same time have been acquainted with James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, Ernest Hemingway, Picasso, Jackson Pollock. A lot of the storyline was far fetched to me. But I did like the last few paragraphs and the novel was nicely wrapped up in that respect. It wasn't the best narration, but that was due to the fact that it appeared to have been recorded in different places and then lumped together. Would I revisit... Not my favourite William Boyd novel, but I enjoyed it more than some lighter novels
