Alastair Reynolds is a British science fiction author and former astrophysicist whose novels combine hard science, vast cosmic scope, and dark, atmospheric storytelling to create some of the most ambitious and intellectually rigorous space opera being written today.
Born in Barry, South Wales in 1966, Reynolds studied astronomy at the University of Newcastle and St Andrews before earning a PhD in astronomy from the University of St Andrews. He worked for the European Space Agency in the Netherlands for over a decade as a research scientist before becoming a full-time writer.
Revelation Space (2000) was his debut — the first novel in the Revelation Space universe, a far-future setting spanning thousands of years and featuring post-human civilisations, alien threats, and mysteries on a cosmic scale. Chasm City, Redemption Ark, Absolution Gap, and Inhibitor Phase continue the series. The Prefect Dreyfus Emergency series is set in the same universe.
His standalone novels include House of Suns, Pushing Ice, and Terminal World. The Revenger series is a lighter, adventure-focused trilogy. Eversion (2022) was a structurally inventive mystery spanning multiple time periods.
Reynolds writes with the authority of a working scientist — his physics is rigorous, his astronomical settings are convincing, and his sense of cosmic scale is genuinely awe-inspiring. But his novels are also driven by compelling characters, atmospheric settings, and mysteries that pull readers through hundreds of pages.
The audiobook editions of Reynolds's novels are immersive and intellectually stimulating. His books and audiobooks are essential for science fiction fans who love hard science, vast scope, and stories that make you feel the immensity of the universe.
