Alexandre Dumas

Alexandre Dumas was a French novelist and playwright whose adventure novels are among the most widely read works of fiction in any language — a literary giant whose stories of swashbuckling heroes, daring escapes, and romantic intrigue have captivated readers for nearly two centuries. Born Alexandre Dumas père in Villers-Cotterêts, France in 1802, he was the grandson of a French nobleman and a Haitian enslaved woman. His father was General Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, one of the highest-ranking men of African descent in European military history. Dumas moved to Paris as a young man and began writing plays before turning to the serialised novels that would make him one of the most famous authors in the world. The Three Musketeers (1844) and its sequels, The Count of Monte Cristo (1844-1846), The Man in the Iron Mask, and dozens of other novels were published as serials and devoured by enormous audiences. Dumas was extraordinarily prolific — he employed a team of collaborators and ghostwriters, most notably Auguste Maquet, and published under his name an estimated hundred thousand pages across hundreds of works. His novels are characterised by breathless pacing, larger-than-life characters, impossible escapes, and a sheer joy in storytelling that remains irresistible. The Count of Monte Cristo's tale of betrayal, imprisonment, and elaborate revenge is one of the most satisfying plots in all fiction. Dumas died in 1870. In 2002, his remains were moved to the Panthéon in Paris. The audiobook editions of Dumas's novels are magnificent — his adventure storytelling is perfectly suited to being read aloud. His books and audiobooks are timeless classics for lovers of adventure, historical fiction, and magnificent storytelling.
