Anthony Ryan

Anthony Ryan is a British fantasy and science fiction author whose Raven's Shadow trilogy launched one of the most successful self-publishing stories in modern fantasy and established him as a major voice in epic military fantasy. Ryan began writing Blood Song as a self-published novel on Amazon, where it quickly became a bestseller and attracted a devoted following for its masterful first-person narration, compelling world-building, and intense battle sequences. The novel's success led to a traditional publishing deal with Ace Books (Penguin). Blood Song (2011/2013) introduced Vaelin Al Sorna, a warrior trained from childhood in a military order called the Sixth Order, and told his story through the framing device of a historical account. Tower Lord (2014) and Queen of Fire (2015) completed the Raven's Shadow trilogy, expanding the world and perspective. The Draconis Memoria trilogy — The Waking Fire, The Legion of Flame, and The Empire of Ashes — was set in a world where dragons are real and their blood grants magical abilities, blending fantasy with industrial-era technology. The Black Song and the Covenant of Steel series continued his output of military fantasy with complex worldbuilding. Ryan writes with a particular strength in military fantasy — his battle sequences are vivid and tactically detailed, his warrior characters are complex and compelling, and his worlds are built with the kind of depth that rewards committed readers. The audiobook editions of Ryan's novels are immersive and dramatic, with narrators capturing the sweep and intensity of his military fantasy worldbuilding. His books and audiobooks are essential for fantasy fans who love epic battles, complex warrior protagonists, and richly imagined worlds.
