Bram Stoker

Bram Stoker was an Irish author, theatre manager, and the creator of Count Dracula — one of the most iconic and enduring characters in all of fiction. His novel Dracula (1897) defined the modern vampire myth and has influenced over a century of horror fiction, film, and popular culture. Born Abraham Stoker in Clontarf, Dublin in 1847, he was a sickly child who was bedridden for much of his early years. He recovered to become an athletic young man, studying mathematics at Trinity College Dublin, where he also became involved in drama criticism and the university's philosophical society. Stoker worked as a civil servant in Dublin before becoming the business manager of the Lyceum Theatre in London, where he worked alongside the great actor Sir Henry Irving for over twenty-seven years. Irving's commanding, charismatic, and sometimes terrifying personality is often cited as one of the inspirations for Dracula. Dracula (1897) is his masterpiece — an epistolary novel told through letters, diary entries, newspaper clippings, and ship's logs, following Count Dracula's journey from Transylvania to England and the group of people who band together to destroy him. The novel drew on folklore, travel writing, and the gothic tradition to create a new kind of horror that has proved inexhaustible in its cultural influence. Stoker wrote numerous other novels and short stories, including The Jewel of Seven Stars, The Lair of the White Worm, and the short story collection that includes A Star Trap. None achieved the lasting fame of Dracula, though they demonstrate his range within the gothic and supernatural genres. Stoker died in London in 1912. The audiobook editions of Dracula and Stoker's other works are atmospheric and gripping. His books and audiobooks are essential — the work of a writer who gave the world one of its most powerful and enduring nightmares.
