C. S. Lewis was one of the twentieth century's most influential writers, a British author, scholar, and Christian apologist whose works of fiction, literary criticism, and theology continue to reach millions of readers worldwide. Born Clive Staples Lewis in Belfast in 1898, he was educated at Oxford University and became a Fellow and Tutor at Magdalen College, Oxford, before later taking the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at Cambridge University. Lewis is best known for The Chronicles of Narnia, a series of seven fantasy novels beginning with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, which has sold over 100 million copies and been translated into forty-seven languages. His science fiction Space Trilogy, his Christian apologetics (including Mere Christianity and The Screwtape Letters), and his literary scholarship all demonstrate extraordinary range and intellectual power. He was a member of the Inklings, an informal literary group that included J.R.R. Tolkien. Lewis died on 22 November 1963, the same day as John F. Kennedy and Aldous Huxley. His audiobooks and books remain perennial bestsellers, offering listeners and readers of all ages stories of wonder, moral imagination, and spiritual depth that transcend their era.
