Chris Brookmyre is a Scottish crime and science fiction writer known for his darkly comic, politically charged thrillers that combine violence, satire, and sharp social commentary. Born in Glasgow in 1968, he studied English at Glasgow University and worked as a journalist in London and Los Angeles before becoming a full-time novelist.
Brookmyre's debut novel Quite Ugly One Morning introduced his anarchic style to readers and won the inaugural Bloody Scotland Crime Book of the Year. His extensive bibliography includes the Jack Parlabane series following an investigative journalist, the Jasmine Sharp and Catherine McLeod novels, and standalone thrillers like All Fun and Games Until Somebody Loses an Eye. He has won multiple awards including the McIlvanney Prize and the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year.
Writing as Chris Brookmyre for crime fiction and Ambrose Parry (with his wife, the anaesthesiologist Dr Marisa Haetzman) for Victorian-era crime novels, he demonstrates remarkable range while maintaining his trademark intelligence and dark humour. His audiobooks and books offer listeners and readers crime fiction that is both wickedly entertaining and genuinely thought-provoking, written by someone who never lets a good thriller get in the way of a sharp political point.
