David Nobbs was a British novelist, screenwriter and comedy writer who is best remembered as the creator of The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin, one of the most beloved British television comedies of the 1970s and 1980s. Born in 1935, Nobbs began his career writing for television comedy shows before turning to novels. The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin tells the story of a middle-aged businessman who fakes his own death to escape the tedium of suburban life, only to reinvent himself in a series of increasingly absurd new identities. The novel, and the television series it spawned starring Leonard Rossiter, became a cultural touchstone for anyone who has ever fantasised about walking away from the daily grind. Nobbs wrote over twenty novels and numerous television scripts throughout his career, earning a reputation for witty, humane and sharply observed comedy. His audiobooks and books remain treasured by fans of British comic writing. He died in 2015.
