Farley Mowat was a Canadian author, conservationist and one of the most beloved and widely read writers in Canadian literary history. Born in 1921, he wrote over forty books that sold more than seventeen million copies worldwide and were translated into dozens of languages. And No Birds Sang is his powerful memoir of his experiences as a young Canadian soldier during the Second World War, serving in the Italian campaign. The book chronicles his transformation from an eager young volunteer into a battle-hardened soldier confronting the horror, futility and moral devastation of war. Mowat's war memoir is considered one of the finest accounts of combat experience by a Canadian writer. He is also celebrated for Never Cry Wolf, The Dog Who Wouldn't Be and other works that championed Canada's wildlife and wilderness. His audiobooks and books remain essential Canadian reading, combining literary skill with passionate advocacy for the natural world. He died in 2014.
