Graham Greene was one of the most important British novelists of the twentieth century, a writer whose morally complex, beautifully crafted fiction explored faith, doubt, betrayal, and the human capacity for both good and evil in settings spanning the globe. He is widely considered one of the greatest English-language novelists, and his work remains as powerful and relevant as when it was first published.
Born in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire in 1904, Greene was the son of a headmaster. He studied History at Balliol College, Oxford, and worked as a journalist for The Times before publishing his first novel, The Man Within, in 1929. He converted to Catholicism in 1926, and his faith — or rather, his struggle with faith — became a defining theme of his fiction.
Greene famously divided his novels into "entertainments" and more serious literary works, though the distinction was always questionable — his thrillers were literary, and his literary novels were thrilling. Brighton Rock (1938) was a crime novel that became a profound meditation on good and evil. The Power and the Glory (1940) followed a whiskey priest on the run in revolutionary Mexico. The Heart of the Matter (1948) and The End of the Affair (1951) explored the agonies of Catholic conscience.
His later novels — The Quiet American (1955), Our Man in Havana (1958), The Comedians (1966), The Honorary Consul (1973), and The Human Factor (1978) — were set in the political hotspots of the Cold War era. Greene's travels as a journalist took him to every conflict zone of the mid-twentieth century, and his fiction reflects that restless, engaged life.
Greene died in 1991. The audiobook editions of his novels are outstanding. His books and audiobooks are essential — the work of a master storyteller whose moral seriousness never diminished his gift for gripping narrative.
