Gregg Hurwitz is an American thriller writer and screenwriter whose novels combine breakneck plotting, meticulous research, and morally complex protagonists. He is best known for the Orphan X series, featuring Evan Smoak — a former government assassin turned vigilante who helps desperate people the system has failed.
Born in 1973, Hurwitz grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and studied English and Psychology at Harvard University. He received his Master's degree from Trinity College, Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He has also written for film, television, and comics, including runs on Batman and Wolverine.
The Orphan X series, beginning with Orphan X (2016), follows Evan Smoak, who was taken from a children's home as a boy and trained as part of a secret government programme to become a lethal black-ops agent. After leaving the programme, he reinvents himself as "the Nowhere Man" — someone who helps people in desperate situations, reachable only through a specific phone number passed from one person to the next. The series includes The Nowhere Man, Hellbent, Out of the Dark, Into the Fire, Prodigal Son, Dark Horse, The Last Orphan, Lone Wolf, and Antihero.
Before the Orphan X series, Hurwitz wrote acclaimed standalone thrillers including The Tower, Do No Harm, The Kill Clause, and Trust No One.
Hurwitz's writing is distinguished by its relentless pace, its technical precision (he embeds with law enforcement and military units for research), and its exploration of moral questions about justice, loyalty, and redemption.
The audiobook editions of the Orphan X series are hugely popular, with narration that delivers the tension and action of Hurwitz's plotting at full intensity. His books and audiobooks are essential for thriller fans who love a hero who operates outside the law but never outside his own moral code.
