Holly Black is an American author of fantasy fiction for children and young adults whose darkly imaginative worlds have made her one of the most popular and influential fantasy writers of her generation. Born in New Jersey in 1971, she grew up in a decaying Victorian house and studied English at Rutgers University before earning a Master's degree from the University of Vermont.
Black is best known for The Spiderwick Chronicles (co-created with Tony DiTerlizzi, adapted into a film), the Modern Faerie Tales trilogy, the Curse Workers trilogy, The Coldest Girl in Coldtown, and the Folk of the Air trilogy, which became a massive international bestseller. Black Heart is part of The Curse Workers series, exploring a world where magic — or 'curse work' — is illegal and controlled by crime families. Her fiction is characterised by its morally complex characters, its dark reimagining of folklore, and its refusal to sanitise the dangerous glamour of the faerie world.
Black has won numerous awards and co-edited influential fantasy anthologies. Her audiobooks and books offer listeners and readers fantasy fiction that is sharp, seductive, and thrilling — stories where magic always comes at a price and the fae are never safe.
