Hugh Howey is an American science fiction author whose Silo series — originally self-published — became one of the great success stories of independent publishing and a major television series. His work combines gripping dystopian world-building with intimate character studies and a deep fascination with how societies function under extreme pressure.
Born in 1975 in Charlotte, North Carolina, Howey has lived an unconventional life — he has worked as a yacht captain, a bookseller, and a roofer, and spent years sailing and travelling before his writing career took off.
Wool, published as a self-published short story on Amazon in 2011, was the beginning. The story — about a toxic, post-apocalyptic world in which the remnants of humanity live in a vast underground silo — found an audience and grew into a series. Howey expanded it into a full novel, then added Shift (a prequel) and Dust (a sequel), creating a trilogy that was eventually collected as the Silo series. The books sold millions of copies, were translated into over forty languages, and the print rights were acquired by major publishers.
The Silo series was adapted into a critically acclaimed Apple TV+ series, Silo, starring Rebecca Ferguson, bringing Howey's underground world to a massive new audience.
Beyond Silo, Howey has written the Sand series, the Beacon 23 novella series (also adapted for television), and other science fiction works. He is also a prominent advocate for independent publishing and has written extensively about the changing publishing landscape.
The audiobook editions of the Silo series are hugely popular, with narrators capturing the claustrophobia, tension, and humanity of Howey's underground world. His books and audiobooks are essential for science fiction fans who love intelligent, character-driven dystopian fiction that asks big questions about society, truth, and survival.
