Ian Mortimer is a British historian and author known for his innovative approach to bringing the past to life. Born in 1967, he studied History at the University of Exeter and holds a PhD from the same university, as well as a research fellowship at the University of Reading. He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and the Royal Geographical Society.
Mortimer is best known for his Time Traveller's Guide series, which reimagines historical periods as if the reader were actually visiting them. The Time Traveller's Guide to Medieval England became an international bestseller and was followed by guides to Elizabethan England, Restoration Britain, and Regency Britain. He has also written acclaimed biographies and historical studies, including The Perfect King: The Life of Edward III, The Fears of Henry IV, and 1415: Henry V's Year of Glory, which provides a day-by-day account of the year of Agincourt.
His approach to history — immersive, sensory, and focused on lived experience rather than dry dates and politics — has won him both popular readership and scholarly respect. His audiobooks and books offer listeners and readers a vivid, immediate connection to the past that makes history feel less like a subject to be studied and more like a world to be explored.
