Jessica Townsend is an Australian children's author whose Nevermoor series has become one of the most celebrated and commercially successful middle-grade fantasy series of the 2020s.
Originally from the Gold Coast, Queensland, Townsend worked as a copywriter in Australia and London before publishing her debut novel. The idea for Nevermoor came to her while she was living in London, missing home, and imagining a magical city.
Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow (2017) introduces Morrigan Crow, a girl cursed to die on her eleventh birthday, who is whisked away to the enchanted city of Nevermoor and must compete in a series of trials to earn a place in the prestigious Wundrous Society. Wundersmith and Hollowpox: The Hunt for Morrigan Crow continue the series, with Hollowpox winning the Waterstones Children's Book Prize. Silverborn is the fourth instalment in what Townsend has said could extend to nine books.
The series draws frequent comparisons to Harry Potter for its richly imagined magical world, its warm-hearted protagonist, and its ability to balance wonder, humour, and genuine danger. But Nevermoor is very much its own creation — Townsend's world-building is wildly inventive, her characters are distinctive, and her themes of belonging, identity, and self-worth resonate deeply with young readers.
The series has been published worldwide and has sold millions of copies.
The audiobook editions of the Nevermoor books are enchanting — the magical world translates beautifully to audio. Townsend's books and audiobooks are essential for young fantasy readers and anyone who loves imaginative, warm-hearted storytelling.
