Julia Donaldson is one of the world's most successful children's authors, a former Children's Laureate whose picture books have sold over a hundred million copies worldwide. Born in London in 1948, she studied Drama and French at Bristol University and worked as a songwriter for children's television before turning to picture books. Donaldson's most famous works include The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom, The Snail and the Whale, Stick Man, Zog, and Charlie Cook's Favourite Book, most of them illustrated by Axel Scheffler. The Gruffalo alone has sold over thirteen million copies and been translated into over a hundred languages. Her books are beloved for their rhythmic, rhyming text, their memorable characters, and their ability to delight both children and the adults reading aloud to them. Beyond picture books, Donaldson has written plays, novels for older children, and songs. She served as Children's Laureate from 2011 to 2013. Her audiobooks and books are staples of childhood around the world, offering young listeners and readers stories that combine linguistic playfulness with warmth, humour, and just enough danger to make them thrilling.
