Len Howard was a British musician, naturalist, and author who abandoned her career as a professional violinist to study birds in their natural habitat in the Sussex countryside. Her pioneering book Birds as Individuals, first published in 1952, was a groundbreaking work of ornithology that challenged the prevailing scientific view of birds as mere instinct-driven creatures. Howard argued, based on years of close observation, that individual birds have distinct personalities and intelligence. Her work anticipated later developments in animal behaviour science. Howard's audiobook brings her remarkable observations and deep empathy for the natural world to new listeners.
