Mark Lawrence is a British-American fantasy author whose dark, intelligent, and emotionally complex novels have made him one of the most acclaimed writers in modern fantasy fiction. His work is characterised by morally ambiguous protagonists, lyrical prose, and world-building that subverts genre expectations.
Born in Champagne-Urbana, Illinois in 1966, Lawrence moved to the UK and holds dual citizenship. He has a PhD in mathematics and has worked as a research scientist. He lives in Bristol with his family, including his severely disabled daughter, whose care has shaped his perspective on life and his writing.
The Broken Empire trilogy — Prince of Thorns (2011), King of Thorns (2012), and Emperor of Thorns (2013) — introduced Jorg Ancrath, a teenage prince on a brutal quest for power in a post-apocalyptic world that was once our own. The series was controversial for its unflinching violence and its morally reprehensible protagonist, but it was also acclaimed for its intelligence, its prose quality, and its willingness to challenge genre conventions.
The Red Queen's War trilogy, the Book of the Ancestor trilogy (Red Sister, Grey Sister, Holy Sister), and the Book of the Ice trilogy followed, each demonstrating Lawrence's range and his ability to create vivid, complex worlds. The Book of the Ancestor, set in a convent where nuns are trained as warriors, was particularly praised.
The Book That Wouldn't Burn and The Book That Broke the World launched a new series centred on a vast, mysterious library.
Lawrence also runs the annual Self-Published Fantasy Blog-Off (SPFBO), which has become an important platform for discovering independent fantasy authors.
The audiobook editions of Lawrence's novels are compelling, with narrators capturing the dark beauty and emotional depth of his writing. His books and audiobooks are essential for fantasy readers who want their fiction intelligent, challenging, and unafraid of the dark.
