Mary Elizabeth Braddon (1835-1915) was an English novelist and one of the most popular and prolific writers of the Victorian era. She wrote over eighty novels and was a pioneering figure in the sensation fiction genre — a form of Victorian thriller that combined melodrama, crime and psychological tension. Her most famous novel, Lady Audley's Secret, was a massive bestseller and helped define the genre. A Strange World is one of her many novels, showcasing her talent for intricate plotting, vivid characterisation and the exploration of social hypocrisy and hidden vice beneath the respectable surface of Victorian life. Braddon was a publishing phenomenon in her time, and her influence on crime fiction and thriller writing can still be felt today. Available as both a book and an audiobook, A Strange World offers absorbing listening and reading for fans of Victorian fiction, sensation novels and the rich tradition of women writers who helped create the modern thriller.
