Mervyn Peake was a British novelist, poet, illustrator, and artist whose Gothic fantasy masterwork the Gormenghast trilogy is one of the most original and extraordinary achievements in twentieth-century fiction. Born in Kuling, China, in 1911 to missionary parents, he grew up in Tianjin before moving to England as a teenager. He studied at the Royal Academy Schools and became both a visual artist and a writer.
The Gormenghast trilogy — Titus Groan, Gormenghast, and Titus Alone — follows the young heir Titus Groan through the vast, crumbling castle of Gormenghast, a world bound by ancient, absurd ritual and populated by one of fiction's most memorable cast of grotesques. The novels defy easy classification: they combine Gothic architecture, Dickensian characterisation, dark comedy, and prose of astonishing visual richness. Peake also wrote Mr Pye, illustrated editions of Treasure Island and The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, and poetry. He suffered from progressive neurological illness in his later years.
Peake died in 1968. His audiobooks and books offer listeners and readers one of literature's most singular imaginative visions — fiction that creates a world entirely its own, told in prose that is as vivid and strange as the castle it describes.
