Michael Palin is a British actor, comedian, writer, presenter, and national treasure whose extraordinary career has encompassed comedy, travel writing, acting, and historical non-fiction across more than five decades.
Born in Sheffield in 1943, Palin studied modern history at Brasenose College, Oxford, where he began performing comedy. He became one of the founding members of Monty Python's Flying Circus (1969-1974), the comedy troupe that revolutionised British comedy and whose films — including Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Life of Brian, and The Meaning of Life — remain cultural touchstones.
After Python, Palin reinvented himself as one of the world's most beloved travel presenters. Around the World in 80 Days, Pole to Pole, Full Circle, Sahara, Himalaya, and numerous other series took him to every corner of the globe, always with his trademark warmth, curiosity, and gentle humour. The accompanying books became major bestsellers.
His historical non-fiction includes Erebus: The Story of a Ship — a gripping account of HMS Erebus, the vessel that carried Sir John Franklin's doomed 1845 expedition to find the Northwest Passage. Palin traces the ship's extraordinary history from its launch through polar exploration to its discovery on the Arctic seabed.
Palin was knighted in 2019 and has served as president of the Royal Geographical Society.
The audiobook editions of Palin's books — many narrated by the man himself — are a delight. His books and audiobooks are essential for fans of travel writing, history, and one of Britain's most versatile and beloved creative figures.
