Mick Herron is the British author behind the Slough House series โ€” the darkly comic, fiendishly plotted spy thrillers that have become one of the most acclaimed and talked-about fiction series of recent years, particularly since their adaptation into the Apple TV+ hit Slow Horses, starring Gary Oldman. Born in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1963, Herron studied English at Balliol College, Oxford, and has lived in Oxford for much of his life. He published his first novel, Down Cemetery Road, in 2003, winning the Novella Award at the 2004 CWA Debut Dagger. But it was Slow Horses, published in 2010, that launched the series for which he has become internationally famous. The Slough House novels follow a group of disgraced MI5 agents โ€” known as the "slow horses" โ€” who have been banished to a shabby office in the Barbican after career-ending mistakes. Under the supervision of Jackson Lamb, a flatulent, slovenly, and devastatingly sharp spymaster, they handle dead-end administrative tasks while real intelligence work goes on without them. Except, of course, it doesn't quite work out that way. The slow horses keep stumbling into live operations, and Lamb keeps proving that he's the most dangerous man in the room. The series includes Slow Horses, Dead Lions (which won the CWA Gold Dagger), Real Tigers, Spook Street, London Rules, Joe Country, Slough House, Bad Actors, and The Secret Hours. Each book works as a standalone thriller while building a richly layered ongoing narrative about the British intelligence community, political manipulation, and the people who get chewed up and spat out by institutions that have no loyalty to individuals. Herron's writing style is distinctive: dry, witty, sometimes bleak, and always several steps ahead of the reader. He has drawn comparisons to John le Carrรฉ for his cynical, morally complex portrayal of the intelligence world, but Herron's voice is entirely his own โ€” funnier, faster, and with a keen eye for the absurdities of modern Britain. The audiobook editions of the Slough House series are outstanding, with narrators capturing the sharp dialogue and shifting perspectives that make the books so compelling. They have become some of the most popular thriller audiobooks available. The Apple TV+ adaptation, launched in 2022 with Gary Oldman as Jackson Lamb, has brought Herron's work to a huge new audience and cemented his reputation as one of the finest spy novelists working today.
