Nella Larsen was an American novelist and short story writer of the Harlem Renaissance. Born in 1891 to a Danish mother and a West Indian father, she explored themes of racial identity, passing, and belonging in her fiction. Passing, her masterpiece published in 1929, follows two light-skinned Black women who reconnect and are drawn into a dangerous game of racial deception. Her audiobooks and books are essential listening and reading — a landmark of American literature that remains strikingly relevant today.
