Nick Harkaway is a British novelist whose ambitious, genre-defying fiction combines literary ambition with elements of science fiction, thriller, and social satire. Born Nicholas Cornwell in 1972, he is the son of the legendary spy novelist John le Carrรฉ (David Cornwell). He studied at Clare College, Cambridge, and worked in the film industry before turning to writing.
Harkaway's novels include The Gone-Away World, Angelmaker, Tigerman, Gnomon, and Titanium Noir, each demonstrating his extraordinary range and imagination. Karla's Choice, written with his father's approval after le Carrรฉ's death in 2020, brings back George Smiley in a new Cold War adventure, representing both an act of literary inheritance and a tribute to his father's legacy. The novel is set in 1963 and sees Smiley drawn into a case involving a mysterious Russian woman.
His own fiction is characterised by dazzling invention, philosophical ambition, and a playfulness with form that sets him apart from most genre writers. His audiobooks and books offer listeners and readers fiction that refuses to be categorised, blending ideas, action, and literary craft in ways that surprise and challenge.
