Percival Everett is an American author whose prolific, formally adventurous, and intellectually playful body of work has earned him recognition as one of the most important and inventive writers in contemporary American fiction. His novel James — a retelling of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from the enslaved man Jim's perspective — won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2025.
Born in Fort Gordon, Georgia in 1956, Everett grew up in Columbia, South Carolina. He studied philosophy and biochemistry at the University of Miami, earned an MA in creative writing from Brown University, and is a Distinguished Professor of English at the University of Southern California.
Over a career spanning more than forty years and over thirty books, Everett has worked in an extraordinary range of styles and genres — literary fiction, satire, westerns, detective stories, philosophical novels, and experimental work. Erasure (2001) is perhaps his most celebrated earlier novel — a satire about a literary novelist whose parody of stereotypical Black fiction is taken seriously and becomes a bestseller. The novel was adapted into the Oscar-winning film American Fiction (2023).
James (2024) reimagines Mark Twain's classic from the perspective of Jim, revealing the intelligence, humanity, and strategic survival hidden behind the mask Jim wears for white society. The novel won the Pulitzer Prize, the Kirkus Prize, and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize, finally bringing Everett the wide readership his work has long deserved.
His other novels include I Am Not Sidney Poitier, Telephone, The Trees, and Dr. No, each demonstrating his range and his refusal to write the same book twice.
The audiobook editions of Everett's novels are excellent, with narrators capturing the intelligence, wit, and tonal variety of his writing. His books and audiobooks are essential for anyone who values fiction that is ambitious, surprising, and unafraid to challenge both its readers and the literary establishment.
