Rachel Joyce is a British author, playwright, and former actress whose novels are characterised by their warmth, their gentle humour, and their exploration of ordinary people undertaking extraordinary journeys โ both physical and emotional.
Born in 1962, Joyce studied English at Bristol University and trained as an actress before turning to writing. She wrote over thirty original afternoon plays for BBC Radio 4, winning the Tinniswood Award for Best Radio Drama, before publishing her first novel.
The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry (2012) was her debut novel and an immediate bestseller โ the story of a retired man who sets out to post a letter and instead walks six hundred miles across England to visit a dying friend. The novel was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize, won the Commonwealth Book Prize for Europe, and was adapted into a film starring Jim Broadbent. It established Joyce's gift for finding profound meaning in seemingly simple stories.
Perfect (2013) was a darker novel about a boy traumatised by a moment of violence. The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy (2014) was a companion to Harold Fry, telling the story from Queenie's perspective. The Music Shop (1988) was a love story set in a record shop. Miss Benson's Beetle (2020) followed two unlikely companions on an expedition to New Caledonia to find a golden beetle.
Maureen Fry and the Angel of the North (2022) and The Broken Foot (2024) returned to the world of Harold Fry.
Joyce's writing is distinguished by its generosity of spirit, its compassion for its characters, and its belief in the redemptive power of kindness and human connection.
The audiobook editions of Joyce's novels are wonderful โ warm, moving, and perfectly suited to being listened to on a long walk of one's own. Her books and audiobooks are essential for anyone who appreciates fiction that is gentle, wise, and quietly life-affirming.
