Spike Milligan

Spike Milligan was an Irish-British comedian, writer, poet, playwright, and actor whose anarchic wit and surreal humour revolutionised British comedy. Born Terence Alan Milligan in Ahmednagar, India, in 1918 to an Irish father serving in the British Army, he grew up between India, Burma, and England. He served in the Royal Artillery during World War II, an experience that profoundly shaped both his worldview and his writing. Milligan is best known as the primary creator and writer of The Goon Show, the BBC Radio comedy series that ran from 1951 to 1960 and influenced generations of comedians from Peter Sellers to Monty Python. His war memoirs, beginning with Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall, are beloved classics that blend dark humour with vivid, moving accounts of military life. The series, including 'Rommel?' 'Gunner Who?', has remained continuously in print for decades. Beyond comedy, Milligan was a passionate environmentalist, a prolific poet whose children's verse delighted millions, and an actor who appeared in numerous films and television programmes. He published over eighty books across his career, spanning novels, plays, poetry, and memoir. His audiobooks and books continue to bring his unique, boundary-breaking humour to new generations of listeners and readers who discover that his comedy has lost none of its power to surprise and delight.
