Terrance Dicks was a British author and television scriptwriter who became one of the most beloved and prolific writers in the history of Doctor Who, introducing millions of children to the series through his novelisations and original stories. Born in East Ham, London in 1935, Dicks studied English at Downing College, Cambridge. He joined the BBC as a scriptwriter and became script editor of Doctor Who from 1968 to 1974, overseeing the transition from Patrick Troughton to Jon Pertwee and shaping some of the show's most iconic stories, including the introduction of UNIT and the Master. His greatest legacy may be the Target novelisations — over a hundred Doctor Who novels that adapted television stories for print readers at a time when home video did not exist. For an entire generation of fans, Dicks's novelisations were the only way to re-experience the show. Doctor Who and the Abominable Snowmen is among these much-loved adaptations. His prose was clear, exciting, and perfectly pitched for young readers, making him one of the most important figures in children's publishing of the 1970s and 1980s. Dicks also wrote numerous original Doctor Who novels, children's books outside the franchise, and continued to contribute to the show in various capacities throughout his life. He died on 29 August 2019, aged eighty-three. The audiobook editions of Dicks's Doctor Who novelisations are essential listening for fans of the show. His books and audiobooks are beloved by generations of readers who discovered Doctor Who through his vivid, accessible storytelling.
