Tom Holt is a British novelist known for his prolific output of comic fantasy and satirical fiction, with a career spanning over four decades and more than seventy novels that blend mythology, history, and sharp wit.
Born in London in 1961, Holt was writing from an early age — he published his first novel at the age of thirteen. He studied at Westminster School and Wadham College, Oxford, where he read bar studies at law. He also worked as an auctioneer and metalwork dealer before becoming a full-time writer.
His comic fantasy novels — including Expecting Someone Taller, Who's Afraid of Beowulf?, Flying Dutch, Barking, and dozens more — take mythological and historical figures, legendary creatures, and magical concepts and drop them into absurd modern situations. His humour is intelligent, playful, and distinctly British, drawing comparisons to Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams. He also writes under the pen name K.J. Parker, producing darker, more serious fantasy and science fiction that has won the World Fantasy Award.
Holt's strength is his versatility and sheer inventiveness — he can make Norse gods working in insurance offices feel both hilarious and weirdly plausible. His plots are intricate, his wordplay is clever, and his novels move at a pace that keeps readers entertained from start to finish.
The audiobook editions of Holt's novels are great fun — his witty prose translates beautifully to audio. His books and audiobooks are perfect for fans of comic fantasy, clever satire, and readers who like their mythology with a generous helping of absurdity.
