Tom Lutz is an American author, academic and literary journalist. He is the founding editor of the Los Angeles Review of Books and a Professor of Creative Writing at the University of California, Riverside. His writing spans non-fiction, cultural criticism and narrative journalism, with a particular interest in place, landscape and the stories that specific locations hold.
Chagos Archipelago explores the history and fate of the Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean, a territory whose indigenous population was forcibly removed by the British government in the 1960s and 1970s to make way for a US military base on Diego Garcia. The book examines this ongoing injustice through the lens of place, memory and the power of imperial decision-making.
Available as both a book and an audiobook, Chagos Archipelago offers important listening and reading for anyone interested in colonialism, displacement, justice and the stories of places and peoples whose histories have been deliberately erased.
