Virginia Woolf

Virginia Woolf was an English novelist, essayist, critic, and publisher who is one of the most important and innovative writers of the twentieth century. A central figure of literary modernism, she revolutionised the novel with her stream-of-consciousness technique, her exploration of time and memory, and her profound investigation of the inner lives of her characters. Born Adeline Virginia Stephen in London in 1882, Woolf grew up in a prominent literary household. Her father, Sir Leslie Stephen, was a historian and literary critic. The death of her mother when Virginia was thirteen, followed by the deaths of her half-sister and her father, triggered episodes of mental illness that recurred throughout her life. With her husband Leonard Woolf, she founded the Hogarth Press in 1917, which published not only her own work but that of T.S. Eliot, E.M. Forster, Sigmund Freud, and many others. Mrs Dalloway (1925), To the Lighthouse (1927), Orlando (1928), and The Waves (1931) are among the greatest novels in the English language. Each pushed the boundaries of what the novel could do — Mrs Dalloway unfolds over a single day in London, To the Lighthouse captures the passage of time through the consciousness of a family, and The Waves dissolves narrative into the interior monologues of six characters from childhood to old age. A Room of One's Own (1929), her extended essay arguing that women need financial independence and literal space in order to write, remains one of the foundational texts of feminist literary criticism. Woolf struggled with mental illness throughout her life. She died in 1941, having drowned herself in the River Ouse near her home in Sussex. The audiobook editions of Woolf's novels and essays are luminous, with narrators capturing the beauty and complexity of her prose. Her books and audiobooks are essential — the work of a writer who changed the possibilities of literature itself.
