W. Somerset Maugham was a British novelist, playwright, and short story writer who was one of the most popular and commercially successful authors of his era. Born in Paris in 1874, he trained as a doctor before becoming a full-time writer. His works include Of Human Bondage, The Razor's Edge, and The Moon and Sixpence. Cakes and Ale is one of his finest novels — a witty, sharply observed satire of the London literary world and a warm portrait of a woman who refuses to live by society's rules. Maugham's fiction is celebrated for its elegant prose, its sharp observation of human nature, and its cosmopolitan worldview. Maugham died in 1965. His audiobooks and books offer listeners and readers elegant, witty fiction from one of the great storytellers of the twentieth century.
