Walter Dean Myers

Walter Dean Myers (1937–2014) was one of the most important authors of young adult literature in American history. He won the Coretta Scott King Award five times, was a two-time Newbery Honor author, and served as the National Ambassador for Young People's Literature. His writing centred the experiences of Black and brown youth in urban America. 145th Street: Short Stories is a collection set on a single Harlem block, capturing the lives, dreams, and struggles of its residents with compassion, humour, and authentic voice. Myers' storytelling brings the community to vivid life, celebrating its resilience while honestly portraying the challenges it faces. Myers' audiobooks and books remain essential listening and reading for young people and adults alike. His work appeals to anyone who believes that all young people deserve to see themselves represented in literature with dignity, complexity, and genuine literary craft.
