William Makepeace Thackeray

William Makepeace Thackeray was a British novelist who was one of the great Victorian novelists, rivalling Dickens in his time. Born in Calcutta, India, in 1811, he studied at Cambridge and worked as a journalist and illustrator before achieving fame as a novelist. Barry Lyndon (originally The Luck of Barry Lyndon) follows the adventures of an Irish rogue who schemes his way through eighteenth-century European society. The novel was adapted into a celebrated film by Stanley Kubrick. Thackeray's most famous work is Vanity Fair, a panoramic satire of early nineteenth-century British society. Thackeray died in 1863. His audiobooks and books offer listeners and readers brilliant Victorian satire — fiction that skewers social ambition, hypocrisy, and the human comedy with devastating wit.
