Donna Tartt is an American novelist whose three novels — published at roughly ten-year intervals — have each been major literary events. Her fiction combines the scope and ambition of the nineteenth-century novel with a modern sensibility, creating books that are both intellectually demanding and compulsively readable. Born in Greenwood, Mississippi in 1963, Tartt was raised in a small town in the Deep South and showed an early talent for writing, publishing a sonnet at the age of thirteen. She studied at the University of Mississippi and transferred to Bennington College in Vermont, where she studied Classics and became friends with Bret Easton Ellis and Jonathan Lethem. Her time at Bennington — an elite, artistically intense environment — would directly inspire her first novel. The Secret History, published in 1992, tells the story of a group of Classics students at an elite Vermont college who, under the influence of a charismatic professor, commit a murder. The novel was a critical and commercial sensation — a literary thriller that combined a richly atmospheric campus setting with questions about beauty, morality, and the dangerous allure of ancient ideals. It has sold millions of copies and remains one of the most influential campus novels ever written. The Little Friend (2002), set in the Mississippi of her childhood, follows a young girl investigating her brother's unsolved murder. The novel is a dense, atmospheric Southern Gothic that divided critics but demonstrated Tartt's ambition and her command of setting and character. The Goldfinch, published in 2013, won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. The novel follows Theo Decker, a boy who survives a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and takes a painting — Carel Fabritius's The Goldfinch — that becomes a talisman and a burden across decades and continents. The book is a sweeping, Dickensian narrative about art, loss, and the objects we attach meaning to. The audiobook editions of Tartt's novels are excellent, with narrators delivering the rich, immersive prose and complex characters that define her writing. The Goldfinch is a particularly rewarding audiobook experience. Donna Tartt lives in Virginia. Her books and audiobooks are essential for readers who want literary fiction that is ambitious, absorbing, and crafted with the patience and precision of a true artist.
