What to expect
When, in the course of a week, a young heroin addict is gunned down while trying to rob a convenience store, a narcotics dealer is found hanging from a bridge, and the granddaughter of a political bigwig dies of an overdose, Vermont detective Joe Gunther vows to stop the flow of drugs into his beloved state.
Critics Review
-
“As usual, Mayor’s Vermont is not the leaf-peeping paradise the tourists pay to visit. Gatekeeper is infused with a fatalism that gives weight to an agreeably entertaining mystery.”
Washington Post
-
“A wrenching, no-easy-answers look at current narcotics tactics, set off by intriguing characters.”
Booklist (starred review)
-
“Dour Special Agent Joe Gunther chases a passel of wannabe drug lords as entertainingly as ever…Quiet, unassuming, yet charismatic, the ever-readable Sage of Brattleboro shines in his lucky fourteen…[A] page-turner.”
Kirkus Reviews
-
“With his skill at evoking place and character, Mayor is always fun to read.”
