Joseph Jacobs is just an ordinary teenager - he goes to university, skateboards, stays out of trouble. But when he skates past a crime scene which matches a dream he can't forget, everything he once knew to be true begins to unravel.
On his birthday, a strange gift arrives: a dreamcatcher that hums with otherworldly energy. The only clue? An eerie inscription: 'We Are Such Stuff As Dreams Are Made On'.
No sender. No explanation. Only questions.
As his dreams grow darker - and realer - Joseph is pulled into a hidden world where the lines between reality and illusion are blurred. Shadows move with purpose. Time twists. Something is coming. Something ancient... and hungry.
Now, Joseph must unlock the truth behind his visions - before they consume him. For his dreams are changing. And they're not just his anymore...

Johnson's electrifying prose conjures the dreamscape of a strange and futuristic Birmingham. Such an original and thrilling novel!

The story is far from original - nerdy orphan guy turns out to be the chosen one - but setting it in a dystopian Birmingham is quite fun. It’s hard to keep track of the sub-plot of the supernatural serial killer - lots of characters that don’t seem relevant to the main plot. And some really clunky prose here and there.
The worst aspect, for me, is the narration. It’s great to hear the Brum accents and sharing the male and female narration works for me. But the male reader breaks everything into 4 or 5 word clauses even when they aren’t there, often breaking the sense of the sentence and making everything stilted, affecting the flow and tension. Then there are the sound effects; you get the sound of three shots then the narrator says something like “he lifted his gun and fired three times”. Yes, we know, we heard it.
So I won’t be queuing up for the sequel (yes, there’s a cliffhanger - the Empite Strikes Back probably)JanKewl 2026-07-23
