Synopsis

"When Tess Durbeyfield is driven by family poverty to claim kinship with the wealthy D'Urbervilles and seek a portion of their family fortune, meeting her 'cousin' Alec proves to be her downfall. A very different man, Angel Clare, seems to offer her love and salvation, but Tess must choose whether to reveal her past or remain silent in the hope of a peaceful future.Tess's life becomes entangled with the manipulative Alec d'Urberville, the son of Mrs. d'Urberville. One night, Alec takes her to a remote spot, and it is implied that he rapes her. Tess later gives birth to a sickly boy, and her attempts to find a parson willing to christen a child born out of wedlock prove futile. She names her dying child Sorrow. Years later, Tess finds employment as a milkmaid at Talbothays Dairy, where her past remains unknown. There, she falls in love with Angel Clare, an apprentice gentleman farmer. Angel's father, a clergyman, approves of their marriage, believing Tess to be a pure and devout country maiden. However, Tess conceals her past, reluctant to share it with Angel."
