Georgette Heyer

Georgette Heyer was a British author who virtually invented the Regency romance genre and remains, decades after her death, one of its finest practitioners. Her novels — witty, meticulously researched, and populated by unforgettable characters — have delighted readers since the 1920s and continue to attract new fans today. Born in Wimbledon, London in 1902, Heyer published her first novel, The Black Moth, at the age of nineteen. Over a career spanning more than fifty years, she wrote over fifty novels, ranging from Regency romances to historical fiction to detective stories. But it is her Regency novels — set in the England of the early nineteenth century — for which she is best known and most loved. Heyer conducted exhaustive research into the Regency period, building an unmatched knowledge of the era's language, manners, fashion, social customs, and daily life. Her novels are so thoroughly researched that they have been used as reference works by other historical novelists. She created a vivid, self-consistent world of ton balls, curricle races, Almack's Assembly Rooms, and the social intricacies of the English aristocracy. Her most celebrated novels include Regency Buck, The Grand Sophy, Friday's Child, Cotillion, Venetia, and The Unknown Ajax. Each features Heyer's trademark combination of sparkling dialogue, comedic set pieces, and romantic relationships built on wit, intelligence, and genuine emotional connection. Her heroines are spirited, her heroes are dashing, and her supporting casts are richly drawn. Heyer's detective novels, written under the influence of the golden age of crime fiction, are also well regarded, though they have never achieved the same level of fame as her romances. She was intensely private, rarely giving interviews and avoiding publicity throughout her career. She died in 1974, leaving behind a body of work that has never been out of print. The audiobook editions of Heyer's novels have introduced her work to a new generation of listeners. Narrators bring her period dialogue and comedy to delightful life, and the audiobooks are a wonderful way to discover or rediscover her Regency world. Her influence on the romance genre is immeasurable — from Bridgerton to the wider Regency romance boom, Heyer's fingerprints are everywhere. Georgette Heyer's books and audiobooks remain essential reading and listening for anyone who loves romance, wit, and beautifully crafted historical fiction.
